Holiday Ornament Workshops, Starting This Weekend! For Kids, Families and Adults! At Staunton Clayground and Book Dragon! From Paint-Your-Own to Polymer Clay... Come Play!

Hello, friends of the Staunton Clayground!

The holiday season is well and truly underway, as the freshly decorated windows of our lovely downtown shops will attest! We definitely want to get in on the fun, and help you to do the same, making gifts and playing with clay at the same time! What better way to decorate your home for the holidays than with ornaments you've made yourself? Whether hanging from your Christmas tree or in your kitchen window to ward off the winter chill, they will brighten the seasonwith extra love and cheer!

That is why we have put together four different different ornament-making workshops of different sorts, all one-day events (an important detail in this busy season!), some for kids and some for adults and families!

Our members and staff kick off the season with a paint-your-own ornament event this past weekend at Staunton Clayground. Now it’s your turn!

The first is this coming weekend, and there are still some spots remaining. Join us on Saturday, Nov. 23, from 10:00 am–12:00 noon at the Staunton Clayground to Paint-Your-Own Holiday Ornaments! Participants will select three pre-fired ceramic ornaments made by hand right here in our studio to paint using underglaze colors. We will then seal them with a clear topcoat of glaze and put them through their second firing in time for you to decorate your home for the holidays or gift them to a friend.

Come on your own, bring a friend or bring your whole family along! This two-hour workshop is open to adults ages 12 and up as well as to children ages 6 and up, as long as they are working alongside an adult. Ticket price for adults is $45. Accompanying children pay $35. Click here to claim your spot! If this weekend doesn't work for you, never fear! This workshop will be repeated on Saturday, December 7, from 10:00 am–12:00 noon.

Then, on Sunday, December 8, join us at the Book Dragon bookshop, located at 102 W. Beverley Street, for Story Time & Paint-Your-Own Pottery Ornament! A Half-Hour Workshop for Kids Ages 5 and up. Choose between 1:00, 1:30 and 2:00 seatings!

Each 30-minute session will begin with story time, with Jan Brett’s beloved children’s book, The Mitten, and a chance to decorate a clay ornament in the shape of a mitten, handmade for you by the Staunton Clayground pottery studio! Parents can browse the shelves while they wait. Ornaments will be ready to take home at the end of the session, and kids can collect a treat on their way out the door! Ticket price for this event is $10 (each additional child pays $8.00). Click here to claim your spot(s)!

Looking for something to do as a family when the school holidays begin? Then join us back at the Staunton Clayground on Thursday, December 19, from 1:00–4:00 p.m. for Polymer Clay Holiday Ornaments – A One-Day Workshopopen to adults ages 14+, with kids ages 10+ and up welcome if working alongside an adult.

Have you always wanted to try your hand at polymer clay sculpture but didn’t know where to start? What better place than a simple holiday ornament?

Come join us for tea, cocoa, cookies and a chance to make a one-of-a-kind gift, a holiday ornament decorated with polymer clay. Start with a 4” circular wooden base and add a bas relief polymer clay decoration: Santa Claus, snowmen, mischievous elves or simply go where your creativity takes you! Local polymer clay artist Lainie Mabbitt of Second Stories Art will help you to make your vision a reality. Make up to 3 if you have time! Then relax and enjoy sweet treats while we wait for the clay to bake. You can take your ornament(s) home the same day to keep and enjoy or to give as holiday gifts!

In this 3-hour workshop, we’ll talk about the benefits and fun of using polymer clay. You’ll practice techniques to create simple or complex designs that you can use for all kinds of projects at home.

We hope you’ll come play! Meanwhile, now that all of our holiday-workshop ducks are in a row, we can start laying out our calendar for early 2025’s first wheel and handbuilding classes. They’ll be coming soon, so stay tuned!

See you all soon at the Staunton Clayground!
